The activities were aimed at primary and secondary school students.
During this 2022, Adeje has become the Provincial Headquarters of the World Blood Donor Day, for this reason a series of actions are being carried out to inform about the importance of blood to save lives. In this sense, during the months of April and May, the Canarian Institute of Hemodonation and Hemotherapy (ICHH), together with the Adeje town hall, launched a set of activities, aimed at the school population of the municipality, with the aim of raise awareness about blood donation, in primary and secondary school students, in the Schools of Fañabé, Los Olivos, Barranco las Torres, Adeje Casco, Tijoco, Armeñime and the two Secondary Education Centers: IES el Galeón, IES Adeje. In total, around 800 schoolchildren have participated.
The educational proposal consisted of workshops, in which the 5th and 6th grade students learned, through educational games, the basic concepts about blood, its importance in saving lives, its components, the circulatory system, the heart, nutrients and other fundamental topics.
“The purpose of these educational dynamics is to make the school population aware of the importance of regular blood donations,” explained the councilor for the area of Health and Quality of Life, Amada Trujilo Bencomo, who also explained that “students have shown a lot of interest and I am sure that they will encourage their relatives to donate blood and in the future they will become donors once they reach the age of majority”. Next, the pediatrician also assured that “it is important that young people know that donating blood is a fundamental and necessary task, that is why we have proposed taking the campaign to educational centers, so that they create awareness from an early age.”
On the other hand, with the students of 4th ESO, IES el Galeón and 1st and 2nd Baccalaureate of IES de Adeje, a dynamic and participatory workshop was carried out, through digital applications, aimed at informing about the importance of blood donation. They talked about the amount of blood in the body, the elements that make it up, where it is produced and the blood groups. Some doubts were also clarified, for example: who can be a blood donor, where they can donate, how often it can be done, what is the donation process to follow, as well as undoing all the myths and errors related to donation. some of which are used as an excuse not to donate.
The development of this workshop contemplates several objectives, among them being able to improve the training of students in aspects related to blood at a time when their curriculum addresses these contents. Facilitate the work of the teacher by offering complementary material that is also attractive to the student. Promote reflection and debate on the need to donate blood.
Trujillo Bencomo was present at all the activities organized by the ICHH and took the opportunity to thank the management teams of the Primary and Secondary schools for the commitment and support received in this type of event.
In addition to educational actions, solidarity campaigns are also being carried out for blood donation, on different dates and with different social groups.
“We can all participate in blood donation, actively, directly or indirectly, guaranteeing the daily blood needs of the Hospital Centers of the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands”, recalled the councillor.
Therefore, citizens are reminded that the next solidarity campaign to donate blood will be on June 14, at the Adeje Cultural Center (morning and afternoon).
