Lower Franconia’s largest folk festival, the Kiliani, will be opened this year on Friday, July 1, at 7 p.m. with the tapping of the festival beer by Mayor Christian Schuchardt.
Visitors to the Talavera can look forward to 17 days of entertainment with around 70 showmen, numerous rides and amusement shops, a marquee for 5,000 people and many beer gardens. In addition to folk festival classics such as the Ferris wheel, ghost train, wild water ride, bumper cars and various roundabout rides, the “Sky Fall” rides with a rotating gondola at a height of 80 meters and free fall as well as “Best XXL”, a swing at a height of 45 meters, are particularly likely to be popular in 2022 Curls. The fairground is open Monday to Thursday from 2 p.m. to midnight, Friday and Saturday from 2 p.m. to 1 a.m. and Sunday from 1 p.m. to midnight.
The big Kiliani traditional costumes parade starts with over 2000 participants on Saturday, July 2nd at 12.30 p.m. as usual at Residenzplatz. On Sunday, July 3, at 10 a.m., the traditional Kiliani festival service begins in the marquee. Tuesday, July 5th, is senior citizens’ afternoon with the »Rossini« in the Hahn family’s marquee. The two Wednesdays (July 6th and 13th) are dedicated to families with special offers and discounts. And on the two Thursdays (July 7th and 14th) a “Day of Clubs” will be proclaimed. On the opening day (July 1st) and at the Kiliani conclusion (July 17th), fireworks will be lit over Würzburg at around 10:30 p.m. In the Kiliani marquee, mood makers such as the »Aalbachtal-Express«, the »Grumis«, »Die Poacherer« or the »Würzbuam« play.
At the same time as the folk festival, the Kiliani fair takes place for 17 days on the market square, which can look back on a tradition of more than 975 years. According to old custom, it is opened with a cannon salute. The shooting begins on Sunday, July 3 at 12 noon after the cathedral bells have rung and lasts approximately ten minutes. According to records from July 8, 1779, the Kiliani Mass originally began on the Sunday after the service in the cathedral had ended. In addition, the vigilante group, which was provided each year by a different part of the city, fired three salutes behind the cathedral and the military lying on the fortress fired their cannons in rows.
The firecracker shooting in 2022 will be carried out from the fortress by the 1st Würzburg firecrackers – Julius-Echter – from 1985 eV. Opening hours of the sales fair: Monday to Friday 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Even if fun is the priority for visitors to Kiliani, the occasion is actually a religious one. July 8th has been the feast day of the Frankish apostles since the 8th century. And so the Diocese of Würzburg is organizing its traditional Kiliani pilgrimage week between July 3rd and 10th, which in 2022 has the motto “Lend me a hearing heart” (1 Kings 3:9). To begin with, a solemn procession of reliquaries leads from the Neumünster through the city center to the cathedral church. It is customary for parishes from all over the diocese to make a pilgrimage to Würzburg and visit the grave of the martyrs in processions. Various pontifical masses are aimed at specific target groups.
