In several coffee crops in Cauca and Risaralda, a climate-sustainable agriculture model has been implemented by the Solidaridad Network, an international non-profit organization, with Yara Colombia, the Departmental Cooperative of Caficultores del Risaralda (Coopcafer), Expocafé and the National Federation of Coffee Growers.
The purpose of the model is to make them resilient to climate change, increase their productivity, improve the health of soils, reduce the carbon footprint and make efficient use of water.
“Yara aims at strengthening the value chain. It is important that all stakeholders work for the well-being of the producer and the conservation of the planet. For that reason, accompanying coffee growers is essential. We held meetings in conjunction with the technical team of Solidaridad Network and Coopcafer to provide them with training on topics such as efficient fertilization and training on sustainability practices focused on coffee cultivation, ”said Juan David Bernal, coffee leader and manager of the western zone. for Yara Colombia.
This project that seeks to reduce the carbon footprint began in 2014 in nine municipalities of Risaralda. In terms of productivity, it managed to increase the production of the participating farms by 21%.
In its second phase, which began in 2019 and ended in 2020, it was intended to continue with the study of GHG emissions, through the Cool Farm Tool in the municipalities of the departments of Cauca and Risaralda.
The project directly impacted 9,000 hectares and indirectly 13,000 coffee crops where more than 6,000 producers participated.
