New York (Reuters) – Around 30 people were arrested in protests against police violence in New York.
As a police spokesman said on Wednesday, the arrests came when hundreds of people demonstrated in the Brooklyn neighborhood on Tuesday evening against police crackdown on black people. The protests were directed against the latest Monday incident in Philadelphia where police officers shot a black man armed with a knife. A police officer was injured during the demonstration, the spokesman said. In addition, police vehicles were demolished and garbage containers were set on fire.
There has been a debate in the United States about police violence against blacks for months. The trigger was the death of 46-year-old George Floyd on May 25th. He was killed in a police operation in Minneapolis after a white officer held him down with his knee on his neck for minutes. His death sparked demonstrations against racism and police violence in numerous US cities. The issue also plays a role in the ongoing presidential campaign on Tuesday next week. While the incumbent President Donald Trump largely protects the police, his challenger Joe Biden calls for reconciliation.
