The’third pandemic’ of a new coronavirus infection in Korea (Corona 19) is rarely showing signs of subsidence.

As large and small group infections continued throughout the country, a large number of new confirmed cases were poured out during the Christmas holiday (25-27 days). Even after the Corona 19 incident in Korea, it was ranked 1st and 2nd (1,241, 1,132).

In addition, the proportion of patients with’unknown infection route’, who cannot know when and where they were infected, soared to 28%.

To curb this spread, the government decided to extend the steps 2.5 and 2 of the’Social Distance’ between the metropolitan and non-metropolitan areas scheduled to end on the 28th until January 3, next year.

In the case of the metropolitan area, three-stage upgrade observations were also made, but it was concluded that the current spread was suppressed by focusing on the two axes of distance from 2.5 stages and’special quarantine measures for the year-end and New Year’. If the spreading trend does not stop until January 3 of next year, it is expected to consider upgrading the third stage.

Key measures for special quarantine measures during the year-end and New Year include banning meetings of five or more restaurants nationwide, stopping winter sports facilities, and closing sunrise spots.

◇ 999 confirmed local outbreaks on average per day for one week… Even today, it seems to be less than 1,000 people due to the holiday effect

According to the Central Defense Response Headquarters (Bang Dae-bon), the number of new confirmed cases as of 0 o’clock on the previous day was 970, and fell below 1,000 in four days after the last 24 days (985).

However, this is likely to be a’temporary phenomenon’ due to the decrease in the number of inspections during the Christmas holidays. Due to the trend of the Corona 19 week, the size of confirmed cases may increase again from the middle of this week.

The number of new confirmed cases to be announced as of 0 o’clock on this day is expected to come out somewhat less, similar to the flow for the last week. Usually, the effect of the decrease in the number of inspections on weekends and holidays continues until the beginning of the week.

In fact, 559 confirmed cases were counted midway between the quarantine authorities and local governments, such as Seoul, from 0:00 to 6:00 pm the previous day. There were 103 fewer than 662 people counted at the same time the day before.

For the last week (21-27 days), the number of new confirmed patients per day recorded 926 → 867 → 1,90 → 985 → 1,241 → 1,132 → 970, with an average of 1,30 per day. . Of these, regional outbreaks account for most with an average of 999 per day.

This spread of local infection is due to the invasion of Corona 19 into everyday spaces such as restaurants, pubs, and family gatherings, and the recent outbreaks of group outbreaks in nursing hospitals, nursing facilities, and churches, which are vulnerable facilities for infection.

As for major new infection cases, a total of 28 people, including residents and workers, were confirmed in a nursing facility in Yangcheon-gu, Seoul, and 12 people, including teachers and graduates, were infected at a daycare center located in Namdong-gu, Incheon.

In relation to the Gwangsan-gu church in Gwangju, a total of 33 people were tested positive, and the church in Asan, Chungnam and the church in Sangju, Gyeongsangbuk-do were confirmed with 8 and 9 members respectively.

In addition, the scale of infection in existing outbreak cases is increasing day by day, including the Eastern Detention Center in Seoul (accumulated 528 people), 3 hospitals in Goesan, Eumseong, Jincheon-gun, Chungbuk (214 people), and a nursing hospital in Goyang-si, Gyeonggi Province (86 people).

◇ 28.5% of unknown routes of infection… 3 out of 10 don’t know when or where they got infected

The rate of cases of unknown infection route has not fallen from the 28% range. After showing the 27% range on the last 22-25 days (27.1%→27.4%→27.8%→27.2%) for four consecutive days, it reached the highest level at 28.6% on the 26th, and maintained a similar level at 28.5% on the previous day.

This ratio remained in the 15-16% range until the 6th of this month, but it has continued to rise after exceeding 20% on the 8th (20.7%).

About 3 out of 10 confirmed cases do not know the route of infection, which means that a’quiet spread’ is still taking place somewhere.

◇ 2.5 steps extended instead of the 3rd step upgrade in the metropolitan area… “Insufficient measures”, “Step 2.5 plus special quarantine measures for the year-end and New Year holidays”

In the midst of this, the government held a meeting of the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters, presided over by Prime Minister Jeong Sye-gyun the day before, and decided to maintain the current level until January 3 of next year.

The current steps of 2.5 in the metropolitan area and the second stage in the non-metropolitan area were scheduled to end on this day, but it was decided to extend it for 6 days.

Kwon Deok-cheol, the first deputy chief of the junior script, explained, “It is necessary to comprehensively judge and adjust all distancing measures while looking at the trend of how the increase in patients will change according to the effect of special quarantine measures during the year-end and New Year period.”

He continued, “The current situation is somewhat stagnant, and there is no appearance of a decrease in the spreading trend,” he said. “I look forward to seeing that if I try more, it might go into a reversal trend.”

Prospects differ among infectious disease experts.

Choi Won-seok, a professor of infectious medicine at Korea University Ansan Hospital, said, “I don’t think this quarantine measure (extending 2.5 steps) is enough.” “The current level of patient outbreaks is also not tolerable. Eventually, we have not succeeded in reducing the incidence of patients themselves, and in the future,” “If this number continues to accumulate, it will become difficult to handle (domestic medical systems).”

On the other hand, Kim Moran, a professor at the National Cancer Center, said, “Not simply extending the 2.5 steps, but also adding special quarantine measures for the year-end and New Year holidays. Among them, the ban on meetings (more than 5 people in the metropolitan area) is a stronger measure than the 3rd step of distancing.” “If you don’t increase it further, it’s successful. You have to manage it so that it doesn’t increase and gradually reduce it.”

In this situation, the quarantine authorities are tense as four family members who have recently entered the country have been tested positive.

One of the family members in their 80s died of cardiac arrest and was first confirmed, followed by the remaining three as positive.

The quarantine authorities have now collected samples of them and began to analyze the full-length genome. The analysis results are expected to be released within this week as early as possible.

If it is identified as a mutant virus in the UK, it will be the first case in Korea. In particular, as mutant viruses are known to have stronger transmission power, the government’s response to quarantine may be even more difficult.
