Arnold Schwarzenegger, former Republican governor of California: “Trump will go down in history as the worst president”

The famous actor and former Republican Governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger, has attacked the still president Donald Trump – also a Republican – for his role, inciting the masses to march on the Capitol, which led to his occupation and the death of four people on January 6.

“President Trump is a failed leader”, he affirms in a 7-minute video distributed through his Twitter account in which he appears with the United States flag and the California flag.

“He will go down in history as the worst president,” he adds. The good news is that it will soon be as irrelevant as an old tweet, “he says.

Schwarzenegger, who identifies as an immigrant in the United States, compares what happened to the “night of the broken glass”, which occurred in Germany and Austria between November 9 and 10, 1938, in which Nazi stormtroopers led carried out a series of lynchings and attacks on Jewish citizens while the authorities watched without intervening.

At least 91 Jewish citizens were killed during that night and another 30,000 were arrested and subsequently deported en masse to concentration camps.

«A night of lynching against Jews in 1938 carried out by the Nazi equivalent of the Proud Boys”He says, comparing the far-right pro-Trump group that participated in the seizure of the Capitol with the Nazi stormtroopers.

“Wednesday – he continues – was the ‘day of broken glass’ right here in the US. But the crowd didn’t just smash the Capitol windows. They broke the ideas we took for granted. They trampled on the principles on which this country was founded, ”says Schwarzenegger.

The actor and politician recalls that he was born in 1947, two years after the end of the Second World War.

“I grew up surrounded by broken men who got drunk from guilt about their participation in the most evil regime in history,” he explains.

“I have never shared this publicly because it is a painful memory. My father came home drunk once or twice a week, yelling and hitting us and scare my mother. I did not consider him totally responsible because our neighbor did the same to his family and the same did the next door neighbor.

“They felt physical pain from the shrapnel in their bodies and from emotional pain from what they saw or did,” he adds.

TRUMP’S LIES

“It all started with lies, and lies and lies and intolerance. Coming from Europe, I have seen first-hand how things can get out of control, ”he stresses. You think there is a feeling in the United States and around the world that something like that could happen in your adopted country.

He doesn’t think so.

But it states that “President Trump tried to nullify the results of an election and a fair election. He sought a coup by deceiving people with lies. My father and our neighbors were also deceived with lies, and I know where such lies lead.

Schwarzenegger also wonders what they are going to do with those elected officials who have made possible “their lies and their betrayal.”

And remember the words of the twenty-sixth president of the United States, Theodore Roosevelt: «Patriotism means being with the country. It does not mean being with the president.

«They are complicit with those who carried the banner of the sanctimonious insurrection inside the Capitol. But it does not work. Our democracy stood firm“Because a few hours later both houses, the House of Representatives and the Senate, ratified President-elect John Biden.

STRONGER DEMOCRACY

The former Republican governor believes that what happened reinforces American democracy. “Because now we understand what can be lost.”

He affirms that reforms are necessary, so that this does not happen again and hold the people who have brought us to this unforgivable point responsible.

“And we need to look beyond ourselves from our parties and our disagreements and put our democracy first. And we need to heal together from the drama of what just happened.

“We need to heal, not just as Republicans or Democrats but as Americans,” he highlights.

In closing, he appealed in support of President-elect Biden, saying: “President-elect Biden, we wish you great success as our President. If you are successful, our nation will succeed. We support you with all our hearts just as you seek our support. And to those who think they can overturn the Constitution of the United States, know this: You will never win. President-elect Biden, we stand with you today, tomorrow and forever in defense of our democracy from those who threaten it«.
