Arne Slot has performed excellently with Feyenoord in 2023. The trainer won the national title with the Rotterdam team and this season the Rotterdam club is again at the top of the Eredivisie. Emile Schelvis has two points of criticism about his performance at De Kuip.
“Let’s be clear: I still think Slot is a phenomenon that has given Feyenoord oxygen in every respect,” the journalist begins in conversation with RTV Rijnmond. ”Rotterdam South and the whole of Rotterdam needed that. But he could have done better in approaching the euphoria after Feyenoord-Lazio and actually should not have let Marino Pusic go.”
“At the crucial moment when decisions were made, Feyenoord let him go to Shakhtar,” Schelvis continues. ”This sends a signal that when it comes down to it, it is not the group that is most important, but that everyone can fend for themselves. You grant it to everyone, but not when Feyenoord needs him.”
Schelvis has not yet put a championship for Feyenoord out of his mind. ”Ten points seems like a lot, but after two defeats the world looks very different again. At European level, Feyenoord must show against Roma that they learn from the lessons in the Champions League. If Feyenoord gets through that, it could be the boost match of this season. That is a great challenge to work towards.”
