Arne Platzbecker: “Many people act as if you can do whatever you want”

The SPD politician, lawyer and board member of “MenschHHamburg eV” talks about problems in the neighborhood.

“What is the situation?”, our almost daily podcast in cooperation with the Gute Leude Fabrik, explores current issues. Here, prominent leaders and unknown thinkers have their say. The selection by PR professional Lars Meier is purely subjective, but always exciting and surprising. Today’s episode with the politician and lawyer, Arne Platzbecker, is presented by the INC art fair, the art festival from September 6th to 8th in the Museum of Work in Barmbek. The podcast is available in full on the usual channels and at 12pm on ahoy radio.

Lars Meier: Dear Arne, last weekend the camel racing derby took place for the seventh time in aid of “MenscHHamburg eV”. There were various trophies to be won, and after your victory last year, you only came second this time. What happened?

Arne Platzbecker: I lost to a very strong opponent who knows a lot about balls, Arnd Zeigler. It was really close, I was probably only a camel’s length away. It was another great event at the cathedral. It’s just nice when you do camel races with lots of people for a good cause. It’s actually my favorite ride at the cathedral.

Where exactly did the prize money go?

In a very close race, the St. Pauli Church won this time and took home this huge check for 2,222 euros. As a St. Pauli resident, I am particularly pleased about this, as I have lived in the neighborhood for years. The St. Pauli Church does an incredible amount: not only in the social welfare sector, but also in advising residents and those in need in St. Pauli.

What is the situation in St. Pauli?

The whole city is concentrated on St. Pauli. One of the issues is homelessness. We have a new offer with the Bulli soup kitchen right near the St. Pauli church. Where there are offers of help, there are also people who need help. The demise of clubs was a huge issue and actually still is. The cleanliness of St. Pauli is also an issue. This has noticeably improved thanks to various initiatives, but it is still an issue. Many people come to St. Pauli and act as if they can do whatever they want there.

You can listen to the whole episode here. In the “Nice or Crap” section, Arne Platzbecker is pleased about the green redesign of the route from Altona to Hamburg-Mitte.
