What messages do you send to breeders?
FCO 3 is invading Normandy! So, we are trying to prevent them all the more since we are a region with a high density of cattle, with a high level of production. The animals are therefore more sensitive. We remind breeders of the clinical signs, the consequences on production. But we lack data and studies. These are not the same typologies of herds as abroad. Without a doubt, these diseases will cause cell counts and mastitis to explode, lead to fever peaks of 40 and increase the risk of abortions… This is what breeders must prepare for. The size of the herds and the hardiness of the animals must be taken into account.
Are gatherings compromised for you?
For fairs, it is the prefects who will make the decision to maintain or not. The case of FCO in Orne will obviously change things. Normandy will soon be in a regulated zone from one end to the other. Breeders must be able to calculate the benefit-risk in relation to the stakes of a fair even if the health regulations are strengthened.
Do you recommend vaccination to your clients?
Yes, I recommend it even if we know there are side effects. I discuss it openly with my breeders to weigh the benefit-risk. It is a decision that we make together. Vaccination is also a source of stress that can itself trigger side effects. Nothing is trivial. The vaccine does not prevent viremia or transmission. It helps reduce clinical symptoms. This is all the more important since we are in a breeding region. Over time, vaccines will be reworked and will become safer.
5 million additional doses of vaccine to be ordered by the government. Is this enough?
The production and delivery of the vaccine is much slower than the spread of the virus. For now, there is none left. Even for the FCO 8. Every day, I am told that it will arrive without having a date. And I do not choose the size of the vials.
