“I only work for Extra Time, so from now on I will come every week.”
Arnar Vidarsson can put his resignation as national coach of Iceland into perspective. But it still has a sour aftertaste.
Because the dismissal came last week after a 7-0 win against Liechtenstein in the European Championship preliminary round. “Iceland’s biggest victory of all time”, underlines Vidarsson.
“3 days before we lost 3-0 against Bosnia. Not a good match from us. We played passively and with the handbrake on.”
“But we recovered well against Liechtenstein.”
Vidarsson questions his resignation and frames his reign with Iceland.
“I became national coach in 2021, after the national team was caught in a storm due to transgressive behavior.”
“I was not allowed to select 6 players who were accused of sexual assault,” says Vidarsson.
“But in June 2022 the whole situation has cleared up and we could start to concentrate on football. Since then we have played 10 matches, the match against Bosnia was our first defeat.”
Vidarsson therefore did not expect that he would already receive his C4. “The time is incomprehensible to me. The dismissal is very sour.”
Is the Icelander now free on the market as a trainer? “I’ve never planned anything in my life, especially as a coach. I’ll see what comes my way”, Vidarsson avoids the question a bit.
