The Colombian authorities destroyed a laboratory in the department of Antioquia (northeast), owned by the Clan del Golfo, the country’s main criminal gang, which could produce up to a ton of cocaine.
The Army reported this Saturday that the operation, in which the Police also participated, was carried out in the town of Sonsón.
The place had a multiple structure that was used as a laboratory for the processing of coca paste and subsequent manufacture of cocaine.
Two distillation towers, 15 wooden buildings, a 20-ton hydraulic press, three motor pumps, a transformer, a refrigerator, a washing machine and an industrial kitchen, among others, were found there.
Likewise, 2,175 kilos of solid chemical inputs and 2,722 gallons of liquid chemicals were found at the site, material that was made available to the Prosecutor’s Office for the judicial process.
According to investigations, this cocaine processing center belonged to the Jorge Iván Arboleda Garcés front of the Clan del Golfo, of paramilitary origin.
The Clan del Golfo, also known as the Gaitanista Self-Defense Forces of Colombia (AGC), is the largest criminal gang in the country. This group has great capacity for military deployment, which is why it is classified as an organized armed group by the authorities.
Experts who analyze the Colombian conflict estimate that this illegal armed group has a presence in 14 of the country’s 32 departments, where it is mainly dedicated to drug trafficking, extortion, kidnapping, illegal mining and migrant trafficking, among other crimes. EFE
