Buenavista, Mich., September 25, 2024.- In a joint operation, elements of the Mexican Army and the National Guard managed to seize a significant amount of weapons and ammunition in the municipality of Buenavista, Michoacán, one of the regions most affected by violence from organized crime in the state.
During the intervention, which is part of the actions to restore security in the area, four long weapons were seized, these being two AK-47 type rifles and two R-15 type rifles, both models commonly used by armed groups in the country.
In addition to the weapons, a large quantity of magazines and ammunition was seized, as well as tactical equipment related to criminal activities.
In detail, 22 AK-47 rifle magazines were seized (17 metal and 3 plastic for 30 cartridges, and 2 metal for 50 cartridges); 24 R-15 rifle magazines (15 metal and 5 plastic for 30 cartridges, and 4 metal for 20 cartridges); as well as a metal magazine for 20 7.62 x 51 mm caliber cartridges.
As for ammunition, there are 5,100 .223 caliber cartridges; 15,550 7.62 x 39 caliber cartridges; and 15 .308 caliber cartridges, giving a total of 20,665 cartridges.
A camouflage green bulletproof plate container vest was also seized, without plates, with a patch identified with the legend “CJNG”, in reference to the Jalisco Nueva Generación Cartel.
The discovery of this arsenal highlights the magnitude of the weapons handled by criminal groups in the region, making Buenavista one of the critical points in the fight against organized crime in Michoacán.
Authorities are continuing their investigations to identify and dismantle the criminal cells responsible for possessing these weapons. The importance of cooperation between the Army and the National Guard to ensure the safety of citizens in areas of high conflict was also highlighted.
