In the US selection for the World Cup, 21-year-old Armstrong completed the distance in 23.71 seconds, beating the previous record holder Russian Kliment Kolesnikov by nine hundredths of a second.
“There’s no word. It’s something I’ve always wanted to achieve, and now I’m excited,” said the swimmer, winning the only place available to U.S. athletes in the World Championship in that discipline.
At last year’s Tokyo Olympics, Armstrong won the gold medal in the 4×100 meter relay as part of the US team.
