Armistice postponed, Putin warns Ukraine’s future is in jeopardy

Jakarta

President Russia Vladimir Putin warned that Ukrainian statehood was in danger after a ceasefire in the port city of Mariupol was postponed. Russian troops continued to attack and open fire on Mariupol.

Reported by the Associated Press, Sunday (6/3/2022) Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has entered its 11th day. But Russian troops continued to shell the besieged cities. Ukrainian officials say Russian troops have intensified shelling in Mariupol while dropping bombs on the residential area of Chernihiv, a city north of Kiev.

Putin continued to blame the Ukrainian leadership for the war and denounced their resistance to the invasion.

“If they continue to do what they are doing, they are questioning the future of the Ukrainian state,” he said. “And if this happens, it’s entirely on their conscience.”

Putin also criticized Western sanctions that have crippled Russia’s economy and made its currency fall. The sanctions are like a declaration of war from the West.

“The sanctions imposed are similar to declaring war,” Putin said at a meeting with Russian airline Aeroflot. “But thankfully, we’re not there yet.”

Russia’s financial system took another hit when Mastercard and Visa announced that they were suspending operations in the country.

It is known that the third round of peace dialogue between Russia and Ukraine will take place on Monday (7/3). But it is not known exactly where the dialogue will take place.

Previous meetings were held in Belarus and led to the failure of the ceasefire agreement in Mariupol. Ukrainian presidential adviser Oleksiy Arestovych said on television that Russia was not complying with the ceasefire agreement.

Mariupol Mayor Vadym Boychenko said thousands of residents had gathered to get out of the city safely when the shooting began and evacuations were halted. Later that day, he said the attacks were intensifying.

“The city is in a very, very difficult state of siege,” Boychenko told Ukrainian TV. “Relentless shelling of residential blocks is ongoing, planes have been dropping bombs on residential areas. Russia is using heavy artillery, including Grad multiple rocket launchers.”

Mariupol’s city council has postponed the evacuation of its citizens through humanitarian corridors and accused Russian troops of violating a ceasefire meant to allow civilians to leave the city within five hours.

“Due to the fact that the Russian side did not comply with the ceasefire and continued to open fire on Mariupol and its surroundings and for security reasons, the evacuation of the civilian population has been postponed,” city officials said in a statement on social media.
