YEREVAN – Last week, leaders Armenia, Azerbaijan and Russia signed a joint declaration ending the conflict in the disputed territory Nagorno-Karabakh. Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said hundreds of Armenian soldiers were still missing as a result of the six-week escalation.

“We hope to find some of them still alive. Yesterday, we found an injured soldier who was previously pronounced dead,” Pashinyan said in a statement, as reported by Sputnik on Monday (16/11/2020).

He then said, the exchange of detainees will begin after both parties complete the process of exchanging the remains of all those killed in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. Pashinyan hopes the national mourning day will be announced in Armenia after completing the funeral.

Previously, Armenia reported the deaths of more than 2,300 of its soldiers in the latest conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh, while Azerbaijan has not disclosed any military casualties. (Read also: Russian troops see the bodies of Armenian soldiers lying on the streets)

Pashinyan’s remarks came days after he agreed to withdraw Armenian troops from Nagorno-Karabakh and hand over a number of territories to Azerbaijan, in line with a peace accord signed on November 10.Also read: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Russia Agree to End the Nagorno-Karabakh Conflict)

Under the agreement, Azerbaijan and Armenia will stop at their current positions and exchange prisoners, and nearly 2,000 Russian peacekeepers will be deployed to Nagorno-Karabakh. Russia has dispatched more than 1,100 peacekeepers to the region along with 1,168 military and support equipment.
