Incident on the Azeri-Armenian border amid stalled peace talks.
An Armenian soldier was killed today by the Azerbaijani army near the border between the two Caucasian countries, which have strained relations and have faced each other in several conflicts, AFP reported, citing a statement from the Armenian Defense Ministry.
“Azerbaijani forces opened fire on an Armenian combat position in Bardzruni,” in southwestern Armenia, near the border with the Azerbaijani enclave of Nakhchivan. An Armenian soldier was fatally wounded, the ministry said, adding that an investigation was underway.
The incident this afternoon, after last Thursday, the two countries renewed discussions on the demarcation of their common border, reports BTA.
Peace talks between the two Caucasian states are at a standstill, AFP notes, recalling that Baku and Yerevan have been embroiled for decades in a territorial dispute over the Azerbaijani region of Nagorno-Karabakh, which Baku took back in September after a lightning offensive against Armenian separatists. Since then, almost the entire Armenian population of the region, over 100,000 of the registered 120,000 people, fled to Armenia.
Armed incidents, often resulting in casualties, also occur regularly on the official border between the two countries. Peace talks between the two former Soviet republics have not made much progress, although their leaders have said a peace deal could be signed by the end of the year.
