Azerbaijani troops have crossed the border with Armenia and entered its territory in southern Armenia at a depth of 3.5 kilometers, said Armenian interim prime minister Nicholas Pashinyan on Thursday, calling the violation of Armenia’s sovereignty and urging a negotiated solution.
“In the morning, the Azerbaijani armed forces crossed the state border in the area of Lake Sevliča, entering a depth of 3.5 kilometers and trying to encircle Lake Sevliča.
“Of course, this is a separate topic as to why such actions could have taken place, but by its nature it is a diversion across the border. The Armenian armed forces responded to these events, making the necessary tactical movements and other actions,” Pashinyan said.
No firearms were used in the activities of the Azerbaijani army.
“They tried to justify their actions with some kind of counterfeit maps, because we have a map approved by Soviet Armenia, Soviet Azerbaijan and the central authorities, which shows where the border between Armenia and Azerbaijan is,” Pashinyan said.
“The current situation is unacceptable, Armenia cannot accept this situation, but given the circumstances, the priority is a negotiated solution through diplomacy. But this is one of the options,” the prime minister said.
He warned that the situation is close to a crisis.
Most of Lake Sevliča is located in Armenia.
Vage Akopyan, the former governor of the Armenian region of Armenia, has previously stated that Russian troops are negotiating with Armenian soldiers to get Azerbaijani troops back to their original positions.
