Armenia Requests European Union Aid for Nagorno-Karabakh Refugees

Armenia has asked the European Union for help in hosting residents who have fled Nagorno-Karabakh. This was reported by the press service of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.

In a few days, more than 100,000 residents of Nagorno-Karabakh, an enclave in Azerbaijan with predominantly ethnic Armenians, have fled to the motherland.

The Armenian capital Yerevan is asking the EU to provide temporary shelter and medical equipment. According to aid workers, many refugees are starving and there is a shortage of medicine.

According to Meloni, Italy and Armenia are currently working together to ensure stability in the region. The United Nations also announced that it would send an aid mission to Armenia this weekend.

On September 19 and 20, Azerbaijan invaded Nagorno-Karabakh, claiming control over the area that has been disputed for decades. As a result, a large flow of refugees started. Azerbaijan says residents can stay to “reintegrate”, but many fear ethnic cleansing by Baku.

Until recently, Nagorno-Karabakh had about 120,000 inhabitants. But the expectation is that almost all of them will leave. According to a representative of the enclave’s separatist government, “the last groups of residents” are now on their way to Armenia.
