The Armenian national security service NSS says it has foiled a coup on Saturday evening. Part of the plan was to assassinate Prime Minister Nikol Pasjinian, according to the NSS.
The prime minister is under pressure in his own country due to agreements he concluded in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. The area is the focus of a long-running battle between Armenia and Azerbaijan, with many fatalities on both sides.
Pasjinian is under fire for agreeing to a temporary truce. He refused to resign several times.
According to the NSS, a former group of officials was behind the assassination attempt and coup d’état. Last week, Armenian authorities arrested ten prominent opposition members suspected of organizing “illegal and violent activities”.
Among the suspects are the former head of the NSS and the former leader of the Armenian opposition party, Vahram Baghdasaryan.
