Armenia and Azerbaijan Make Progress in Normalizing Relations: Territorial Recognition and Humanitarian Crisis

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said that at the meeting with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev in Brussels, the parties made progress in normalizing relations. As a result, Armenia recognized the territory of Azerbaijan in 86.6 thousand square meters. km, and Azerbaijan – the territory of Armenia in 29.8 thousand square meters. km, said Mr. Pashinyan. This is the territory of Azerbaijan, together with the unrecognized Nagorno-Karabakh Republic.

“Three days ago, through the mediation of EU Council President Charles Michel, we took another step forward, emphasizing that Armenia recognizes the territory of Azerbaijan with an area of 86.6 thousand square meters. km, and Azerbaijan recognizes the territory of Armenia with an area of 29.8 thousand square meters. km,” the Prime Minister of Armenia said at the fourth summit of the Council of Europe in Reykjavik (quote from Armenpress).

At the same time, Mr. Pashinyan stated that due to the “illegal blockade of the Lachin corridor”, Armenians in Nagorno-Karabakh have been “under siege” for five months and are experiencing a humanitarian crisis. He stressed that the top priority now is to send an international mission to the Lachin corridor and Nagorno-Karabakh, as well as start negotiations between Baku and Stepanakert (the capital of Nagorno-Karabakh).

On May 14, Pashinyan and Aliyev met in Brussels through the mediation of the President of the European Council, Charles Michel. The next meeting of the heads of Armenia and Azerbaijan may take place in Chisinau on June 1 within the framework of the summit of the European Political Community, after which the parties may meet again in Brussels in July.
