Armed men liberate about 900 prisoners in Congo | NOW

About 900 prisoners were freed by armed men in the Democratic Republic of Congo on Tuesday morning. The men attacked a prison in the city of Beni.

It is not clear exactly who are responsible for the liberation of the group of prisoners. Local authorities believe that an Islamist militant group is behind the action.

The attackers used welding machines to open the doors of the complex in eastern Congo, after which most of the prisoners fled. More than a hundred prisoners remained.

In the east of Congo it has been restless for years and there are various militias who want to enforce control of the area.
