Armed Man Exchanges Fire with Saudi Security Authorities Near US Consulate in Jeddah, Resulting in Deaths

An armed man engaged in a shootout with Saudi security authorities near the US Consulate building in Jeddah, leading to his death and the death of a Nepalese security guard, according to state news agency SPA. The incident occurred on Wednesday when the individual stopped his car near the American Consulate building and exited the vehicle carrying a firearm. Security authorities took immediate action, resulting in an exchange of fire that ultimately led to the gunman’s demise.

A spokesperson for the Makkah Region police stated, “Security authorities took the initiative to deal with him as required, and the exchange of fire resulted in his death.” Additionally, a Nepalese worker who served as a private security guard for the consulate was injured during the incident and later succumbed to his injuries, as reported by SPA.

Investigations into the shootings are currently underway to determine the motives and circumstances surrounding the incident. The US State Department confirmed that no Americans were harmed during the exchange of fire. A department spokesperson stated, “The US Embassy and Consulate remain in contact with Saudi authorities as they investigate the incident.”

This is not the first time the US Consulate in Jeddah has been targeted. In 2016, a suicide bomber was killed, and two individuals were wounded in a blast near the compound. In 2004, five assailants stormed the consulate, using bombs and guns to kill four Saudi security personnel outside and five local staff members inside. Three attackers were killed during the assault, while two were captured.

The attack in 2004 was part of a series of bombings and shootings orchestrated by al Qaeda, targeting expatriate compounds, Westerners working in Saudi Arabia, and other establishments with the aim of overthrowing the ruling Al Saud family.

The American Mission to Saudi Arabia traces its roots back to 1942 when it began as a legation in Jeddah. However, full diplomatic relations between the two countries were not established until 1949. Recent tensions have emerged between Saudi Arabia and the US, with the visit of US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken in January receiving limited coverage in Saudi media.

As the Jerusalem Post previously reported, Saudi Arabia has sought to strengthen its relationships with Russia and China as the Biden administration has pushed back against certain Saudi demands, including lifting restrictions on arms sales and assistance with sensitive high-tech industries.
