Violent clashes broke out this Monday between units of the Haitian National Police and armed groups belonging to the ‘Vivre Ensemble’ (‘Living Together’) coalition led by former police officer Jimmy Cherizier, alias Barbecue.
The clashes took place in the vast Champs de Mars park, in the vicinity of the National Palace and not far from the Haitian State University Hospital, in the center of the capital, which has been taken hostage by armed gangs that wreak havoc day and night. .
These shootings occurred after several days of tense calm in some parts of the capital.
The local newspaper Le Nouvelliste reported gunshots in several places in the metropolitan area of Port-au-Prince, particularly in the city center and in Delmas, although the consequences of the shootings were not certain. The newspaper also reported attacks in the Collège Bird area.
Fear in the streets
This Monday, no clashes or violent events were observed in Pétion-ville, east of Port-au-Prince, the target of repeated attacks for some time by armed gangs, local media reported. The same happened with the Delmas crossing and the Port-au-Prince international airport, where people are afraid to go out into the streets to carry out their usual activities.
In Carrefour, south of the capital, commercial banks are closed.
Meanwhile, the country is still waiting for the installation of the Presidential Transition Council, whose last step has been the signing of the “Political Agreement for a Peaceful and Orderly Transition” by all the actors, sectors and political alliances involved in the process.
Under this political agreement, the mandate of the Presidential Council will end on February 7, 2026, to make way for the inauguration of a new president elected in free, fair and democratic elections.
For a month now, school and university activities have been paralyzed in the metropolitan region of the capital, where students in uniform have not been seen going to school since the end of February.
