/ world today news/ Pravda.Ru special correspondent Daria Aslamova found out from the deputy of the 7th assembly of the Armenian parliament, political analyst Arman Abovyan, how Pashinyan came back to power after the defeat in Nagorno-Karabakh, why the Armenian government refused to help Artsakh in the 44-day war and whether Armenia will become a province of Turkey.
— How did Pashinyan manage to stay in power even after the 44-day war in 2020?
— People vote based on the promises of the authorities. In 2021, Pashinyan promised three key things in his campaign program:
-
subjectivization of the Republic of Artsakh, that is, its self-determination;
-
deoccupation in Artsakh;
-
deoccupation of the territory of Armenia.
This was the reason for his re-election. Plus the state of shock of the population when Pashinyan walked the streets with a megaphone and said: “I’m sorry for what happened, but now we will start fighting for self-determination and de-occupation of Artsakh.” But immediately after the elections, the vector of promises changed 180 degrees .
According to the latest public opinion polls, 70% of the population of Armenia has an extremely negative attitude towards the authorities. In the last mayoral election in Yerevan, many did not go to vote and the government won 9% of the total number of voters.
— Now there is a new generation in Armenia. The fans, the heroes who were 30 years ago, are gone. The Tik-Tok generation has grown up; they have not had a war. They want nothing and support Pashinyan who lost the war.
They always say: times have changed, people are different. This is wrong. In social psychology, the number of passionate people in a society always decreases if the country is in a losing state. A period of apathy ensues. The number of Passionists in Armenia has not changed, but they think like this: no matter who is in power, the situation remains as it is.
This idea is persistently planted by the current government. The number of people with an active civic position who want to oppose the pro-Turkish, pro-Azerbaijani policy of our authorities is steadily growing. Because politics is “to surrender everything and live in peace’. However, the following narrative is emerging in the mass consciousness. Okay, we gave up on Karabakh. Are we living more peacefully? No, 200 kilometers of Armenian territory are occupied.
According to Pashinyan, we should normalize relations with Turkey and Azerbaijan. But Turkey and Azerbaijan do not want normal relations. Azerbaijan is preparing to invade Armenia. That is, the nomadic Turkic-speaking tribes that once settled in our region and received the name “Azerbaijan” in the 1930s claim the entire territory of Armenia, calling it “Western Azerbaijan”.
Turkey’s doctrine assumes a land link with Azerbaijan. This will allow Turkey to control the territory of the Greater Turan that Erdogan dreams of, from the Mediterranean Sea to China, including the territory of Russia: the North Caucasus and the Turkic-speaking republics.
Turkey views us as a hostile element that must be neutralized in order to unite with Azerbaijan. For this purpose, the term “West Azerbaijan” was coined, Armenians are being pushed out of the territories where they have lived for millennia: Nakhchivan, Artsakh, the threat of occupation of Armenia, all the way to Yerevan. Azerbaijan is promoting the resettlement of Azerbaijanis throughout Armenia in order to conclude a so-called “peace treaty”.
„A country proves with blood that it is a country. Why didn’t you prove it in 30 years?
“We proved it not only with blood, but also with struggle. Another thing is that the authorities in Armenia did everything to ensure that the processes would go exactly as they did. And we proved it with blood. The blood of those guys who held Artsakh for 44 days.
— At that time I was in Stepanakert. It was a shock to me on the way, especially in October, that we were the only ones going to Karabakh. Cargo, weapons and people did not come from Armenia. Armenia abandoned Karabakh. The guys defending Karabakh were without helmets and without body armor. They couldn’t even deliver that either.
— It was not Armenia that abandoned Karabakh, but the Armenian authorities. From the first day of hostilities until November 9, the military registration and assembly centers were full of volunteers.
I have been in these positions where 18-year-old boys resisted Turkish commandos who hacked them to pieces with sarma.
The global problem is whose interests the Armenian government protects. Anyone else’s, actually, but definitely not Armenia’s.
„Then why are these people still in power?
— Because there is total information propaganda 24/7, it’s a constant injection of hysteria that if there is a war, we will lose. But the war continues and now, it has not stopped, the occupation of Armenia continues.
„Pashinyan was then re-elected, which means that the people who elected him need him. Maybe everyone will be happy if Armenia turns into another Turkish vilayet.
„He was re-elected based on the promises he made. There will not be another Turkish vilayet in our country. There will be a total collapse of the state.
70% of the population understands this. People are not taking to the streets because they have been told that ruin is inevitable and there is no point in protesting.
— What awaits Armenia in this century?
— If the foreign policy vector does not change, there will be dismemberment of Armenia and war. Turkey and Azerbaijan see our region without Armenians. They talk about it a lot, not directly, but with hints. If the Armenian government agrees with this, we do not agree.
— The Turks of Adjara “crafted” Batumi. Now it is the nominal territory of Georgia, but it is actually Turkish territory, where Turks rule, build mosques and hotels, trade and buy houses. Maybe they will try to do the same Ajaria for you? Why do you think we are talking exactly about physical destruction?
– Adjarianization will not work, in Turkish-Georgian relations there is no trace of the complete rejection that we have. Turkey has never set itself the goal of total annihilation of the Georgian population. And in our case, she did. Purely geographically, the territory of Armenia is an obstacle for the global project of the great Turkish world.
But the situation will not develop according to the most negative scenario, because in Armenia now there is no politics in the classical sense, there are only two visions: we will survive or not. The feeling is created that the processes are irreversible. Maybe 99% of the time this is true. But if at least 1% is left there, then we Armenians will cling tooth and nail to this percentage.
