The top-ranked Asian player’s journey began in Mumbai, where the city’s monsoon forced him to play pickleball instead of tennis. Since that time, the 25-year-old hasn’t looked back and is now poised for global stardom in pickleball.
Armaan said, “I think pickleball started just because I was playing tennis, and in the rain, I started playing pickleball for fun. Eventually, I started playing pickleball during the monsoon season in Mumbai , which can be non-stop sometimes. So, we had a covered court, I used to play for fun, but then, in 2022, we had a professional tournament, which I played in Mumbai, so again, it “But I started growing and I started playing more competitively.” “At the end of August 2023, I started playing pickleball professionally full-time,” Arman told Pickleball Now.
Armaan burst onto the podium in the men’s singles after defeating fellow Indian Ashutosh Mehta 15-1 in the first round and then defeated countryman Ronav Motiani 15-7. In the All India quarterfinals, he lost the first set 10–11 to fifth seed Aditya Ruhela.
Making a strong comeback, he won the second and third sets 11-9, 11-5 and secured his place in the semi-finals. In the semi-finals, Armaan defeated Willy Chung 11-4, 11-1. He will face Dusty Boyer of America in the men’s singles final. Armaan is playing in the men’s doubles event with Harsh Mehta and the pair has reached the finals. The top seeded pair defeated Harsh Shah and Dhiren Patel in emphatic fashion 15-5 in the first round. They defeated the American-Australian pair of Kenta Miyoshi and Tom Evans 15–5.
In the quarterfinals, the Indian pair won over Leander Lazaro and Willie Chung by scores of 11-10, 4-11 and 11-6 in a three-set thriller. Later, they defeated the Australian-Indian pair of Jason W. Taylor and Jai Grewal 11–3, 11–9 in the semi-finals. In the final match, they will face the American pair of Michelle Hargreaves and Roman Estarza.
As far as mixed doubles is concerned, Armaan has partnered with Roos Van Reek of Netherlands. After starting their campaign with an impressive 15-4 win over the American pair of Alex Hunt and Sophia Sewing, the second-seeded Indo-Dutch pair have had a largely average performance in the final. In the quarterfinals, they defeated the Australian pair of Caitlin Hart and Michelle Hargreaves 11–1, 11–6. In the semi-finals, they defeated the Indo-Australian pair of Vishal Masand and Sarah Burr with an easy score of 11-5, 11-1. In the final they will face the Australian pair of George Wall and Danny E Townsend.
Already the best player on the continent, Arman outlined his vision of playing in the United States of America (USA) and testing himself in competitions there. He said, “I mean, I have ticked one box now, which is to be the best in India and maybe Asia. But now the target is to be in the top five in the world. So, I probably want to do more in the States And want to see how it goes We went to America earlier this year and we made the top five at the US Open, so I want to be there a little bit more, play a little bit more in America and see That’s how it is for me.
Armaan’s impact on the game is helping develop the next generation of pickleball players from India by running a coaching center with Harsh Mehta. Armaan said, “So my partner, Harsh, and I run a company called Blaze Pickleball in Mumbai. We have about 200 to 250 kids training with us. A lot of them are competing here.
