Christian Walker rushed to the plate and scored the deciding run in the eighth inning on Nick Ahmed’s single as the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Kansas City Royals 5-4 on Monday night.
Ahmed, who was a pinch pitcher, drove in Walker with an infield single off reliever Aroldis Chapman (0-1), who took the loss.
The Diamondbacks, leading the NL West, improved to 13-11. The Royals have lost nine of their last 10 games and fell to 5-18.
D-backs left-hander Andrew Chafin (2-0) earned the victory by 1 2/3 innings of relief. He struck out Salvador Pérez and Franmil Reyes to end the game.
Edward Olivares hit a solo homer in the first to put the Royals ahead, but the Diamondbacks led 4-2 into the fourth after scoring twice in the second and scoring twice in the third off Kansas City starter Brad Keller.
Tommy Henry pitched 4 1/3 innings for Arizona in his first start of the season, allowing three runs on four hits and four walks. The left-hander has filled Madison Bumgarner’s rotation spot.
For the Royals, Venezuelans Edward Olivares 4-1 with two runs scored and one towed; Salvador Pérez 4-2 with two RBIs. The Dominican Franmil Reyes 5-0.
