Arizona beats Angels thanks to Peralta’s home run in 8th

David Peralta broke the tie with a home run in the eighth inning, and the Arizona Diamondbacks blew a seven-run lead on Tuesday before beating the Los Angeles Angels 9-8.

Kole Calhoun, who was an outfielder for the Angels for years, hit two home runs, three hits and beat his career-high with five RBIs on his return to Angel Stadium in the Diamondbacks jersey. Arizona struggled to score its third win in 10 games despite an 8-1 income in the fifth.

Justin Upton and Jared Walsh each hit home runs for the Angels, who had their chances of making the postseason reduced after falling in the first of their last home games. They have lost four of seven and a chance to gain ground against the Astros and threaten their second spot in the AL West.

Madison Bumgarner set a career-high by conceding 13 hits and equaling his worst record with eight runs in his first appearance against the Angels. The veteran left-hander blew a seven-touchdown lead and remains unsuccessful with the Diamondbacks, who kept him on the mound much longer than expected.

Keury Mella (1-0) pitched the seventh inning for his first major league win and Stefan Crichton pitched the ninth for his second save. Matt Andriese (2-3) took the loss by allowing Peralta’s home run in a one-inning effort.

For the Diamondbacks, Venezuelans Eduardo Escobar 4-0; David Peralta 4-2, with a run scored and an RBI.

For the Angels, Albert Pujols 4-0. Andrelton Simmons from Curaçao 3-2, with two runs scored and one RBI.
