Argentine university professors will protest again – 2024-09-20 13:25:18

Javier Milei, president of Argentina.

Trade unions representing teachers and non-teaching staff of the University of Buenos Airesthe largest higher institution in Argentinadecided this Tuesday to call for a new strike to demand the Government of Javier Miley a salary increase and a larger budget for higher education.

The strike was called for Thursday and it is not ruled out that other public universities in the country will join the strike.

University professors had already gone on strike on September 12, when they also marched to Parliament to demand that the Senate approve a law on financing university education, which finally happened a day later.

But Milei has warned that he plans to veto this law, just as he recently did with an initiative to establish increases in pensions, under the argument of ensuring the balance of public accounts.

The law establishes an increase in the funds allocated to national universities, both for operating expenses and for the salaries of professors and non-teaching staff.

According to the Higher Council of the UBAuniversity teachers’ salaries have lost, on average, between 35 and 55% of their purchasing power in the last eight months. EFE (I)
