The 24-year-old Argentine tennis player fell in four sets against the Swiss Stan Wawrinka and was eliminated in the second round of the last Grand Slam of the year.

End of the American dream for Tomás Etcheverry: he lost 6-7, 7-6, 6-3 and 6-2 against the Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka and was eliminated from the US Open in the second round. Sebastián Báez is the only Argentine left in the tournament, in the singles table.

Etcheverry, number 30 in the world, found himself up against a great rival and after battling at a very high level during the first two sets, Wawrinka brought out his best version and left him on the road. In the next round, the Swiss will face the Italian Jannik Sinner.

The 24-year-old from La Plata had just come off a tough and extensive match against the Finnish player Virtanen, so the physical and mental exhaustion could have played a trick on him. Etcheverry took advantage of only two of the nine break points he had.

Wawrinka, 38 years old and number 49 in the world, already won the US Open in 2016 and he has three Grand Slam titles in his career, being one of the few who managed to break the hegemony of the Big Three (Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic). He knew how to be top 3 in the ranking.

With the removal of Etcheverry, the only Argentinian in the race in the singles draw of the US Open is Sebastián Báez, who on Thursday night will collide with the Brazilian Felipe Meligeni Alvesfor the second round. In doubles, the Molteni-González couple is still alive, and Horacio Zeballos together with the Spanish Marcell Granollers.
