Argentine President Javier Millais: The Rise of a Controversial Figure

President Javier Millais is famous for his ‘outspoken mouth.’ From a young age, he used aggressive words and actions, so much so that his nickname was ‘the crazy one.’ He taught economics at university for over 20 years, and it is known that he was dissatisfied with real-life politics even during this time.

President Millais was born on October 22, 1970 in Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina. His mother, Alicia, was a housewife of Croatian descent, and his father, Norberto, was a bus driver of Italian descent.

Since childhood, he has been nicknamed ‘the crazy one’ (El Loco) due to his unique hot-tempered personality and direct and aggressive speaking style.

At the age of 19, he began studying economics at the University of Belgrano in Argentina. It is said that in the early 1980s, when he experienced hyperinflation caused by the collapse of the Argentine exchange rate, he felt that the conventional economic sense of supply and demand did not apply, and decided to pursue the path of an economist. He served as a professor at leading universities in Argentina, including the University of Buenos Aires.

Even after leaving the classroom, I lived as an economics researcher for a while. He served as chief economist at British investment bank HSBC and Argentine conglomerate Corporación Americas, and served as an advisor to the Argentine government at the International Center for the Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID), an affiliate of the World Bank.

The reason I became a ‘far-right capitalist’ was because I saw Peronism eating away at the Argentine economy. It is said that the chainsaw image that represents him was designed by him as a prop to convey the message that he would eliminate such welfare populist policies.

Communism is at the level of disgust. Since his candidacy, he has publicly stated that he will “break away from communism.” In his January speech at the Davos Forum, which was his debut as president on the international stage, he pointed out, “Communism is the cause of poverty, but major leaders in the West are choosing communism.” In December last year, the previous administration withdrew its plan to join BRICS on the grounds that BRICS is an economic cooperation organization led by China and Russia.
