In the first 15 days of December the price of meat saw an abrupt rise, however it began to decline.
According to the representatives, the reason for the decrease in prices is because the public did not validate the increases due to the loss of purchasing power that is causing inflation.
In one week, the values of the categories of property that are consumed in the domestic market fell sharply after peaks of some special lots of $2,000. Thus, in 7 days, the steers fell on average to $1,456 (%10); the steers, to $1,489 (17%); and heifers, $1,422 (16%).
According to Miguel Schiariti, president of the Chamber of Meat Industry and Commerce (Ciccra), the decrease in the value of the product will be in the order of 20% to 25%.
“The loss is important. “There, not so much in the cuts that are requested at this time.” remarked Sergio Pedace, vice president of the Argentine Chamber of Matarifes and Suppliers (Camya).
The Argentine Beef Promotion Institute (IPCVA) revealed that the prices of different cuts of beef registered a variation of 11.6% in November compared to the previous month. The year-on-year increase is 189.2%.
“No one believed this 50% increase in one week. Neither the public nor the market operators. It was more linked to politics and uncertainty than to the lack of finances,” Schiariti explained.
The Secretary of Agriculture, Fernando Vilella, also referred to the recent increase in meat values. “The price that is today is a price that is difficult to sustain. I get the impression that (the decrease in) purchasing power is going to depress demand and that depression will affect prices,” he estimated.
In this context, the agricultural portfolio reached an agreement with the exporting meat processing plants so that, in the middle of the end-of-year festivities, they can offer five barbecue cuts at discounted prices.
The refrigerators that will participate in the agreement are those that are part of the ABC Exporters Refrigerator Consortium and, in addition, the ChangoMás, Carrefour, La Anónima, Cencosud (Disco, Vea and Jumbo) supermarkets and Friar butcher shops in the north of the country will join.
The Government assured that “in the coming days other supermarket chains will be joining the initiative with their own offers.” The cuts achieved and prices will reach: roast: $4,900; matambre, at $5,900; roast tapa, at $4,900; skirt, $2,900; and empty, at $5,900.
