An Argentine court has suspended new President Milei’s labor reform plans. The Milei government wants, among other things, to restrict the right to strike and extend the statutory probationary period from three to eight months. Milei also wants employees to receive less severance pay.

Milei’s plans were heavily criticized by the umbrella organization of trade unions CGT, among others. The organization went to court. It ruled that parts of the plan were “repressive or punitive in nature” and that it was not clear how the new government’s plans would help create jobs.

The judge wants the plans to be shelved until parliament has ruled on them. The government can still appeal against this decision. The umbrella organization of trade unions is happy with the judge’s decision, but for the time being a major strike is still planned for January 24.

The government plans are part of a larger package of measures with which Milei wants to pull the country’s economy out of the doldrums. Annual inflation in the country has risen to over 140 percent and more than 40 percent of the country’s population lives below the poverty line. Milei wants, among other things, to reduce government intervention and make significant cuts. He also wants to make privatization of state-owned companies possible, for example.
