Argentine Church denounces a “wounded homeland” due to Milei’s policies

Buenos Aires. “Our country is wounded, stripped of everything, half dead” was one of the phrases of Archbishop Jorge García Cuevas, in his homily this Wednesday during the mass celebrated in the Church of San Cayetano, in Liniers, municipality of Buenos Aires, where since Tuesday hundreds of faithful maintained a vigil to ask and thank the saint of the poor and forgotten, before beginning a march that reached the historic Plaza de Mayo, which was joined by social movements, representatives of all the union centers and human rights organizations.

The government of Javier Milei was denounced, warning that “hunger is a form of violence”, the human rights motto during the event, and data was given about a situation that, for many leaders, “has never been experienced in the country”.

García Cueva also called for solidarity with the poorest, demanding “peace, bread and work” and stated: “There are many ways to ignore things; to live self-absorbed, to ignore others, to be indifferent, or to discuss poverty and indigence figures behind desks, sterilized by tears and humanity.”

“They are pushing us towards the worst humanitarian crisis we have ever experienced in Argentina,” was denounced in one of the speeches when they spoke from the stage in front of the Casa Rosada before a crowd that overflowed the Plaza de Mayo and its surroundings, where they called for “maintaining unity to return to government and build with the humble and working people at the center.”

The chants and banners carried by the protesters were aimed at Milei’s government, which in less than eight months has increased poverty and indigence to figures ranging from 59 percent to 69 percent in the provinces, which the far-right government condemned to hunger by not sending the revenue sharing funds. In light of all this, they called for “unity, solidarity, resistance and hope.”

They repudiated the brutal unemployment after the president announced in these hours that he will continue advancing the layoffs, while the Secretary of Human Capital, Sandra Pettovello, continues to disobey the justice system, which ordered the distribution of the tons of food left by the previous government to supply the Popular Dining Halls. She has not done so, despite the fact that millions of Argentines are already destitute.

“It is important that the three trade unions, social movements and various human rights organizations and small producers are united to say that hunger is a crime,” said Hugo. Puppy Godoy, leader of the Autonomous Workers’ Union (CTA).

“We are demanding an end to this situation of hunger and a halt to the policy of plundering that Milei is carrying out. It is no longer enough for them to have a State that destroys everything that has to do with the needs of the popular sectors and finances the intelligence services and the repressive forces,” he said.

He added that “we are convinced that this day is a clear symbol that resistance will allow us to put an end to so much despotism sooner rather than later.”

He claimed unity, solidarity, the right to work and “the full validity of human rights that will overcome the darkness of this time, to illuminate a perspective of hope and recovery of the national heritage and the rights of our people,” he added, in the midst of several political scandals.

Repressor Astiz would have written a bill

On the other hand, the ruling party and its partners and friends prevented the deputies of the Peronist Union for the Fatherland party from presenting a project to expel the six legislators of the ruling La Libertad Avanza, who not only visited the military, tried and convicted for crimes against humanity committed during the last military dictatorship (1976-1986), but also wrote their own project to be released, which has been requested by the current vice president, Victoria Villarruel.

It is now known that the group made up of those detained who were most involved in the kidnappings, deaths and disappearances of thousands and thousands of victims handed over a folder containing the project that was allegedly written by Alfredo Astiz, who the media claims heads the group of well-known criminals.

Former President Fernandez accused of gender violence

The other scandal is the complaint by the ex-partner of former President Alberto Fernández, Fabiola Yañez, who is in Spain with their son, for which she asked to speak with Judge Julián Ercolini, who belongs to the so-called “judicial party” created during the government of the conservative Mauricio Macri, with the support of the United States embassy.

Days ago, Yañez had rejected the possibility of filing a complaint. However, she contacted Ercolini and expanded the complaint about beatings and telephone harassment from Spain.

Fernández posted a statement on his social media, in which he said: “Having learned from the media of Fabiola Yáñez’s complaint against me, I want to express that the truth of the facts is different. I will only say that it is false and that what she now accuses me of never happened.”

He added that “for the safety of my children, myself and Fabiola herself, I will not make any media statements, but will provide evidence and testimony to the courts that will show what really happened.”
