Argentine Beef Consumption Drops as Prices Rise: Impact on Butcher Shops and Supermarkets

The figure is compared to January 2023. In comparison, almost 14,000 tons less were eaten. In the last month alone, the increase in butcher shops and supermarkets was at an average of 20%.

The Chamber of Industry and Commerce of Meat and Derivatives of the Argentine Republic (Ciccra) indicated that the level of beef consumption during January of this year was equivalent to 186,300 tons of beef with bone, a figure that is 6.8% below the level recorded in the same month last year, when 13,600 more tons were marketed. This drop has its reason for the rise in cut prices, which touched the 20% average during the first month of the year and exceeded 330% compared to January 2023.

Prices

According to the latest survey by the Institute for the Promotion of Argentine Beef (Ipcva), price variations were high but there were differences depending on the point of sale. In supermarkets, meat showed a variation of 28.2% compared to the previous month and 339.7% compared to January of last year. While in butcher shops, beef had an increase of 15.8% during January and 394.3% year-on-year.

Go up

During the first month of the year, meanwhile, the main increases in average prices occurred in the roast tapa (23.7%), the loin (23.3%) and the tail of cuadril (23.2%).

Already last December, beef had risen 40% after the increase that the farm had in the Cañuelas Agricultural Market.

Other habits

Meanwhile, and always according to Ciccra, of the 63.2 kilos of beef per year that were consumed per person in Argentina in 2014 (the year with the strongest domestic consumption so far this century), it has now reached only 52. .4 kilos. Of course, prices are not the only reason, since there have been changes in consumption habits and a drift towards so-called “white” meats (poultry and fish) or even towards pork.

On Parchment

Our city does not escape the decline in consumption levels, the Pergamino Food Chamber had already anticipated it in its last monthly report in which it indicated that sales fell by just over 25 percent comparing January 2024 with January 2024. 2023. It should be noted that this decrease is an average of the movements in commercial operations that occurred around the food basket in which meat is included.

Through a survey, LA OPINION was able to learn that the situation in the butcher shops raises some concern since there was resentment in sales levels since not only did beef consumption drop due to farm prices but also is warning of a decline in the consumption of “alternative” meats, such as chicken and pork.

As a trend that establishes how common the consumption of the most economical cuts of meat is, so in beef, consumers prefer common pulps, minced meat, osso buco, in conclusion the lowest priced.

Due to inflation and low purchasing power, the weekend barbecue became a luxury.

Chicken has always been the quintessential option when it comes to reducing costs, but this is changing due to the constant change in its price, some weeks it registers small increases that are around 5% or 10% and then it goes down, and later it goes up again . Despite this fluctuation, the cost per kilo remains “stable”, despite this constant in the cost of chicken, a drop in sales was also recorded during the month of January.
