Keto: The President of the Ecuadorian Football Association announced on Wednesday the appointment of Argentine Gustavo Alvaro as coach of his first team, to lead him in the South American qualifiers for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Alvaro succeeds Dutchman Jordi Cruyff, who resigned at the end of July without leading the national team in any match.

“Gustavo Alvaro and his technical team will take over the national team and lead us in the qualifiers (World Cup 2022) and Cuba America 2021, and we hope for the World Cup 2022 in Qatar,” said Federation President Francisco Igas, during a video conference.

Alvaro, 58, supervised several Argentine clubs, winning the Copa Sudamericana in 2007 with Argentine Arsenal. He also led Boca Juniors at the end of 2019.

After playing a friendly match in September, he will make his debut in the World Cup 2022 qualifiers against Argentina in Buenos Aires and then Uruguay in Quito in October.

Cruyff, the son of the late Barcelona legend, Johan, decided to resign from his post due to the outbreak of the new Corona virus.

The announcement of the resignation of Cruyff Jr. came through the Ecuadorian Federation, who said in a statement that they had agreed on the “terms of disengagement,” which included “compensation for the termination of the contract by one side, the coach.”

Cruyff joined the Spaniard Antonio Cordon, who resigned as sporting director for Ecuador due to “institutional instability” in the federation.

Last April, IGAS was excluded from the presidency of the Union by the Board of Directors, accusing him of paying both Cruyff and Cordon more than what was agreed upon. But IGAS refused to acknowledge the legality of the decision to remove him from his post, citing the support he enjoys from the South American Football Association “CONMEBOL”.

In January 2020, Cruyff replaced Colombian Hernan Dario Gomez, who was sacked after leaving the first round of the Copa America in June 2019.

Ecuador was last in its group behind Uruguay, Chile and Japan, which participated as a guest in the continental tournament.
