Argentina’s Strong Presence at the San Sebastián Film Festival Highlights Thriving Audiovisual Industry

Sunday, September 24, 2023

The majority of participants in the festival are linked to the Open Audiovisual Assembly and are grouped under the slogan “United Argentine Cinema”, which represents all sectors of the Argentine film industry. Argentina’s presence at the festival this year is a record, and this is attributed to the hard work and talent of the technical and artistic teams, as well as the continuity of a film policy that has fostered the film industry in the country.

The Argentine audiovisual cultural industry has stood out for its creativity and resilience, despite an adverse economic context. In addition, it has been a driver of the economy, generating direct and indirect employment in a wide range of associated services. In the last 15 years, there has been sustained growth in employment in this sector, reaching 45%. According to data from the INCAA Audiovisual Observatory from April 2022, the economic impact of the audiovisual industry is equivalent to 5.2% of the total Argentine economy, considering its direct and indirect effects on other sectors.

The INCAA, as the body responsible for promoting the Argentine audiovisual industry, has been recognized and awarded at renowned international festivals, including San Sebastián. Additionally, this year, Argentine films have stood out at festivals such as Venice and Cannes, and an Argentine film has been nominated for the Oscars.

The Argentine representatives at the festival emphasized the importance of improving and strengthening policies to promote the industry, instead of deactivating a thriving and consolidated audiovisual industry. They noted that countries that have developed a successful audiovisual industry have done so thanks to the continuity of solid industrial and cultural policies.

Argentina has the right and responsibility to maintain its own collective imagination through cinema, where it can capture its memory, identity and customs. Argentine cinema has been and will continue to be that fundamental space for the country.

Argentine representatives in San Sebastián hope that their concerns will be heard and that the national film industry will continue to be supported and strengthened in the future.
