Argentina’s president was vaccinated with the second dose of the Russian vaccine back in February. But now he has symptoms – and a rapid antigen test has already failed.
Argentina’s President Alberto Fernández claims to have tested positive for the coronavirus, although he was injected with the Russian vaccine Sputnik V weeks ago. The 62-year-old wrote on Twitter on Saturday that he had a slight fever and headache and therefore did a rapid antigen test. This was positive.
He also submitted to a PCR test, the result of which is not yet available. PCR tests, which are evaluated differently from the rapid tests in laboratories, are considered to be more reliable.
Inoculated with Russian vaccine Sputnik
Fernández celebrated his 62nd birthday on Friday. He was doing well, “even if I would have liked to end my birthday without this message,” he wrote on Twitter. He had isolated himself as a precaution.
The Argentine head of state has already been fully vaccinated against the corona virus. According to information from the presidential palace, he received the second dose of the Russian vaccine Sputnik V on February 11th.
The preparation has not yet been approved in Germany or the European Union. The European Medicines Agency (EMA) is currently examining an application for approval in the EU.
In Argentina, a good 2.3 million people have been proven to have been infected with the coronavirus, and more than 56,000 have died in connection with Covid-19. With autumn approaching in the southern hemisphere, the country’s authorities are arming themselves for the next corona wave.
