Javier Millay’s Argentina will not join the BRICS emerging market bloc in line with the ultra-liberal new president’s campaign promise, reversing the course of the previous centre-left government. This was confirmed today by the presidency, quoted by France Press, writes BTA.
In a letter to Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, as well as other BRICS members (Russia, India, China, Republic of South Africa), Javier Millay “informed them that Argentina’s accession to BRICS as a full member from January 1, 2024 is not considered appropriate” by his government.
“As you know, the foreign policy line of the government that I have been leading for a few days differs in many ways from that of the previous president’s office,” said Millay, who took office on December 10.
“In this sense, some decisions taken by the previous administration will be reviewed. Among them is the creation of a division for the active participation of the country in BRICS,” he noted in the letter published by some media.
After the end of its last summit in August in Johannesburg, the bloc announced it was expanding, with an invitation for membership from January 1 extended to six new countries. Apart from Argentina, the other countries are Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, Saudi Arabia and the UAE.
In his election campaign, Javier Millay assured that, if elected president, his country would not join the BRICS, claiming that he refused to “promote agreements with communists because they do not respect the basics of free trade, freedom and democracy”. . “This is geopolitics,” he stressed.
Foreign Minister Diana Mondino also recently confirmed that Argentina will opt out of joining the BRICS.
Millais has in the past been very vocal about the Chinese regime and the Brazilian president, calling him, among other things, a “corrupt communist.” However, between the two rounds of elections and especially after his election, he softened the tone significantly and laid the foundations for peaceful diplomatic relations with Brazil and Beijing, Argentina’s two main trading partners.
Millay has always maintained that he views the US and Israel as his natural strategic allies.
The spokesman of the Argentine presidency explained today that the letters sent to the BRICS member countries show that “we are in the process of a foreign policy change that justifies a deeper analysis than that of the previous government”.
