On Tuesday, China’s foreign ministry said it would be a “serious mistake” in Argentina’s diplomacy if the South American country cut ties with major countries such as China or Brazil, Reuters reported.
China is an important trade partner for Argentina, and its elected government attaches great importance to relations with China, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Mao Ning said at a regular press conference.
On Sunday, Argentina elected Javier Millay as its new president. The right-wing libertarian has criticized China and Brazil, saying he will not deal with “communists” and favoring stronger ties with the US.
Russia’s RIA Novosti news agency also quoted Diana Mondino, an economist who was appointed foreign minister under Millay, as saying her country would not join the BRICS group.
Argentina was among six countries invited to become new members of BRICS, a bloc made up of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.
Mondino also told RIA Novosti that Argentina would “stop interacting” with the governments of China and Brazil when asked if Argentina would promote exports and imports with those countries.
“The two countries have strong economic complementarities and huge potential for cooperation,” Mao said when asked by reporters to comment on Mondino’s remarks.
“China is willing to continue working together with Argentina to promote the stability and long-term development of bilateral relations.”
