The country’s front-runner, Javier Milei, when asked about the BRICS summit, said his government would only build relations with countries that stood up for freedom, peace, democracy and free trade. “In the BRICS summit, there are countries that don’t follow these lines … However, the private sector will be able to trade freely with the BRICS members,” he told reporters on the 24th.
Candidate Patricia Bullrich, from the “pro-market opposition coalition”, took a more hawkish tone. “Argentina under my government will not join the BRICS,” she said.
“The current president’s commitment to joining the BRICS with Iran during Russia’s invasion of Ukraine puts Argentina in a huge ‘vulnerability’,” she said in a speech.
The leaders of the BRICS countries announced at the end of the Johannesburg summit that Saudi Arabia, Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia and the United Arab Emirates will join the BRICS group together with Argentina on January 1 next year, promoting the expansion of the global influence of the BRICS group.
Before that, Argentina’s President Fernandez was a close ally of the Brazilian leader. The country’s accession last year was also facilitated at the recommendation of Brazilian President Lula.
Speaking in Johannesburg, Lula said Brazil would negotiate with a new president no matter who wins Argentina’s Oct. 22 elections. “The new president of the country may not want to negotiate with Brazil, that is his sovereign right. However, relations with Argentina are very important for Brazil and South America,” he said.
