New Delhi Argentina has canceled its common position with Great Britain on the Malvinas Islands. Argentine Foreign Minister Santiago Cafiero announced Thursday that the South American country is withdrawing from the so-called Foradori-Duncan agreement after meeting with his British counterpart, James Wise, at the G20 foreign ministers’ meeting in New Delhi. The Argentine government wants to renegotiate the sovereignty of the Malvinas Islands and therefore proposes a meeting with the British delegation at the United Nations headquarters in New York.

Wise immediately responded: “The Falkland Islands are British,” he wrote on Twitter. Local residents have the right to decide their own future, but have chosen to remain a British Overseas Territory.

The so-called Foratori-Duncan Agreement is a 2016 joint declaration that regulates the production and maritime transport of gas and oil and fishing in the Falkland Islands. In the eyes of the current Argentine government, the previous government went too far to accommodate Britain.

The Falkland Islands have been under British administration since 1833. Argentina attacked the islands in 1982. After the Argentine armed forces suffered a series of defeats during the 72-day war, the two sides signed an armistice.

Argentina still claims the islands, known as the Malvinas.

The UN Committee on Decolonization passed a resolution calling for talks between Britain and Argentina. In 2013, the islanders voted overwhelmingly to remain in Britain. After the discovery of oil and gas deposits around the islands, the conflict has intensified again.
