Jakarta, CNNI Indonesia —
Argentina wins a World Cup 2022 making the greatest player of all time debate between Lionel Messi vs Cristiano Ronaldo end.
Argentine star Lionel Messi has now proven he is better than Cristiano Ronaldo after leading La Albiceleste to victory in the 2022 World Cup.
Argentina won the 2022 World Cup after defeating France in the final which took place at Lusail Stadium on Sunday (18/12) WIB evening.
Albiceleste won 4-3 on penalties against France after the sides had drawn 3-3 until extra time. Messi was relieved that finally his trophy case was complete with a World Cup victory.
Before the 2022 World Cup, Messi was often compared to Ronaldo. That’s because the two mega stars have both achieved flashy accomplishments throughout their careers.
Among them, Messi and Ronaldo had competed in the Spanish league with Barcelona and Real Madrid. Then they also competed fiercely in the hunt for the Champions League trophy and Ballon d’Or.
Trophies in national competitions, the Champions League trophy, the Ballon d’Or were won by both. Even if Messi has collected more Golden Balls than Ronaldo, that is seven awards, while CR7 has only five.
Messi also managed to lead Argentina to win the 2021 Copa America to match Ronaldo’s success taking Portugal to Euro 2016.
But now the debate about the greatest of all time (GOAT) or who is the best player in the world of all time ended when Messi led Argentina to win the 2022 World Cup.
This achievement completes Messi’s collection of trophies in the world of football. Meanwhile, Ronaldo is still intrigued by the World Cup trophy that he has never won in his entire career with the Portuguese national team.
Portugal’s failure in the round of 16 of the 2022 World Cup made Ronaldo cry bitterly as he may struggle to win this prestigious trophy in the next four years due to his old age.
“The GOAT debate is over. The main prize is now part of the collection [Messi]. His legacy is now complete. Today Argentina won the World Cup for the third time. Leo Messi this Player of the Match trophy for you” FIFA wrote on Twitter.
