Buenos Aires, Sep 27 (EFE) .- Argentina reopened on Monday its two main land border crossings with Brazil and Chile, where a pilot test of “safe” entry of foreign tourists, who until now had been prohibited from accessing these routes, will be carried out. due to the health emergency of covid-19.

The passes enabled as “safe corridors” are the Los Libertadores international pass, popularly known as the Cristo Redentor pass and which connects Chile with the Argentine province of Mendoza (west) through the Andes Mountains, and the pass over the bridge Tancredo Neves, on the Iguazú River, which connects the Brazilian city of Foz do Iguaçu with the Argentine of Puerto Iguazú, in the province of Misiones (northeast).

“We are going to encourage tourism again and we are going to move forward with plans to facilitate domestic and international tourism,” said the Argentine Interior Minister, Eduardo “Wado” de Pedro, in a ceremony at the Tancredo Neves pass.

The minister said that this reopening was possible thanks to the improvement of the epidemiological situation in Argentina and the progress of the vaccination campaign in the South American country.

“After 560 days and thanks to the progress of the vaccination campaign, we began to open the borders safely,” said Florence Carignano, Director of Migration for Argentina.

The reopening of the two border crossings came from an administrative decision signed this Monday by De Pedro, which establishes the start of pilot tests for the entry of foreign tourists through these two routes and also through the international airport of Iguazú Falls, in Misiones.

According to that resolution, the pilot test on the Tancredo Neves bridge begins this Monday and will continue until next Thursday, while the safe corridor at the Cataratas airport will be inaugurated next Friday.

During the pilot test, tourists who have stayed in Brazil for the last fourteen days will be able to enter Misiones through the Tancredo Neves pass.

The same criteria will be applied to those who enter Mendoza from Chile during the pilot test, between this Monday and Thursday.

In all cases, tourists must have completed the vaccination scheme against covid-19 at least fourteen days before entering Argentina, present a negative PCR test at origin carried out within 72 hours prior to entry and make a antigen test upon arrival in Argentina.

People vaccinated with a complete scheme and with negative tests for covid-19 will be exempt from quarantine, but must, in any case, undergo a PCR test between the fifth and seventh day after admission.

Carignano indicated that “progressively” the Argentine government plans “to open all the other” border crossings where it will “generate safe corridors.” EFE
