BUENOS AIRES (AP) – A total of 3.5 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines arrived in Argentina in the early hours of Saturday from the United States. The vaccines from the pharmaceutical company Moderna arrived in two almost simultaneous flights in what is so far the largest vaccine donation in the region, Argentine authorities reported.
“It is the most important donation that has been made in the region,” Argentine cabinet chief Santiago Cafiero told the media. He affirmed that with this donation “36.5 million vaccines are already reached in Argentine territory.”
The South American country registers more than 4.7 million infected and more than 101,000 people died from the disease, according to the latest official figures.
Argentina had to modify a law through a decree to be able to receive Moderna’s vaccines, after that same law hindered agreements with Pfizer, the only vaccine currently approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA for its acronym in English) to vaccinate the population between 12 and 17 years.
Argentina has vaccinated 21.6 million people with a first dose and almost 5.3 million with two doses, out of a population of 45 million inhabitants.
