The Argentina national team beat the Netherlands on penalties in the quarterfinals of the World Cup in Qatar.
The main half of the meeting ended with the score 2:2, in the penalty shootout the score was 3:4.
The first goal for the Argentine team was scored by defender Nahuel Molina in the 35th minute from the transfer of Lionel Messi. The same captain also distinguished himself by converting a penalty (73). Wout Wegorst (84, 90+11) scored twice in the Netherlands.
Messi provided five assists in the World Cup playoffs – a record. He surpassed Pelé, who has four assists. If we take all stages of the World Cup, only Diego Maradona (8) has more assists than Messi (7).
Wegorst has scored the last goal in a World Cup play-off since at least 1966 (100 minutes 30 seconds, excluding extra time). He also became the first Dutchman in history to score a brace after coming on as a substitute in a World Cup match.
In the match between Holland and Argentina, 15 cards were shown – this is a record number at the World Cup. The previous record was in the Cameroon – Germany match in 2002 (12 yellow and 2 red).

Argentina reached the semi-finals of the World Cup for the fourth time in their history, the Argentines having reached the final on all three previous occasions (1986, 1990 and 2014).
Argentina have won more penalties at the World Cup (five out of six) and only Spain (one out of five) have lost more penalties than the Netherlands (one out of four).
The Argentina national team in the semifinals will now play against the Croatian team, which sensationally blow Brazilians (1:1, 4:2). This semi-final will take place on December 13th.
