Buenos Aires, May 7 (EFE).- The General Directorate of Customs of Argentina applied a fine of 7,350 million pesos (33 million dollars) to a company for “irregularities” in the transfer of eleven works of art, including paintings of artists such as Vicent Van Gogh, Paul Cézanne or Claude Monet, the organization reported this Sunday.

The sanctioned firm also removed works by Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Edgar Degas, Paul Gauguin, André Derain, Camille Pissarro, Alfred Sisley and Maurice de Vlaminck from the country.

In a statement, Customs acknowledged that, at first, it authorized the release of these paintings “under the temporary export regime” in order for them to be exhibited abroad.

This regime implies that the goods are exempt from taxes, with the condition that they be “reimported” into the national territory before the expiration of the term granted by Customs.

However, once the works were out of the country, the exporters indicated that they would not return and that their transfer abroad “should be understood as definitive”, something that did not have the authorization of the official body.

“Nor did they enter foreign currency, since they registered the transfers for consideration and without commercial value,” said Customs, which valued the exported paintings at more than 350 million dollars.

For this reason, Customs accused the exporting company of violating article 970 of the Customs Code, which provides for sanctions for those who do not comply with the obligations assumed under the temporary export regime. EFE
