Argentina extended a strict lockdown on Friday in the capital, Buenos Aires, until August 16, to curb the spread of the new Corona virus, the national news agency Telam reported.

President Alberto Fernandez said that the new Corona virus is “far from contained” and is spreading everywhere in and around the capital.

The South American country has recorded more than 185,000 cases of coronavirus, as well as more than 3,400 deaths.

Fernandez said that “social gatherings” are prohibited and that those who violate the quarantine will face penalties.

Argentina, the second largest economy in South America, was already facing a deep crisis even before the outbreak of the Corona epidemic.
