Argentina arrested relatives of Ecuadorian drug criminal Fito and deported them from the country on Friday. Fito escaped from an Ecuadorian prison almost two weeks ago. After his escape, Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa declared a state of emergency.
Argentine Security Minister Patricia Bullrich announced the expulsion at a press conference. According to Bullrich, eight relatives of Fito, the nickname of José Adolfo Macías, arrived in Argentina on January 5. They then moved into a house purchased in November. The escape of the still fugitive Fito took place on January 7.
A group of family members were taken to Guayaquil airport in Ecuador by an Argentine Air Force plane. Family members include Fito’s wife and two sons.
“Our hypothesis is that Fito planned to buy the house, emigrate his family from Ecuador and then escape from prison,” Bullrich said. The minister also reported that Argentina was tipped off about this by Ecuador.
Argentina’s Interior Minister Guillermo Francos added that Argentina does not want to become a narco-state and is not a refuge for criminals. “We are determined to fight these types of crimes.”
Much unrest in Ecuador after escape
Ecuadorian President Noboa has also responded to the deportation. “We know that Fito’s family was in Argentina and that they were deported to Ecuador,” the president said RCN Radio. According to the president, family members are often involved in money laundering and other financial affairs of mafia gangs.
Noboa declared a state of emergency the day after Fito’s escape. Since that escape, things have been restless in Ecuador. Uprisings broke out in several prisons, there were explosions and police officers, among others, were kidnapped. A group of armed men also managed to enter a television studio and take those present hostage for a while.
