The Government of Argentina expressed this Saturday its condemnation of the events recorded on Friday night at the Mexican Embassy in Quito, where The Ecuadorian Police burst in to arrest former Vice President Jorge Glasy He recalled the case of the Venezuelan opponents who took refuge in the Argentine diplomatic residence in Caracas.
“The Argentine Republic joins the countries of the region in condemning what happened last night at the Mexican Embassy in Ecuador”said the Argentine Foreign Ministry in a statement.
The Ecuadorian Police broke into the headquarters of the Mexican embassy in Quito on Friday and stopped Glasformer vice president during the presidential term of Rafael Correa (2007-2017), the same day that the Mexican Government granted him political asylum.
Glas, who entered the embassy last December and shortly after requested asylum, is being prosecuted for alleged embezzlement of funds in the so-called ‘Reconstruction’ case of the province of Manabí, after the 2016 earthquake.
In its statement, the Government of Argentina “calls for full observance of the provisions” of the 1954 Convention on Diplomatic Asylum, “as well as the obligations arising from the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations”.
Venezuela
In the note released by the Executive of Javier Milei, it is recalled that Argentina is a State party to the Convention on Diplomatic Asylum and that it has recently granted this asylum status “to Venezuelan political leaders and is awaiting the issuance of the corresponding safe-conduct passes.
Since last March 26, six Venezuelan opponents have found refuge in the official residence of the Argentine Embassy in Caracas.
