The Argentine Government expressed its condemnation on Monday “the request for arrest against the winner of the elections, Edmundo González Urrutia” by the Venezuelan Justice and warned about a “wave of radicalization” of the Government of Nicolas Maduro.

“The Argentine Republic rejects the request for arrest issued by the Public Prosecutor’s Office of the Maduro dictatorship against the winner of the presidential elections of July 28, Edmundo González Urrutia,” the Argentine Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

Besides, He warned “the international community about a wave of radicalization of the regime that seeks to criminalize Venezuelan democratic forces”.

The text published by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs also denounced that «In a context of massive human rights violations in the face of popular protests unleashed after a gross electoral fraud, the regime intends to curtail the fight for democracy and freedom, persecuting opposition leaders, who are victims of a ruthless political persecution, violating all their fundamental rights in a framework of state terrorism».

Finally, he stressed that will not remain indifferent “to the infamous actions of the Maduro dictatorship” and will continue “supporting its people in their battle to recover democracy”.

The Argentine government’s message comes shortly after a Venezuelan court specializing in terrorism-related crimes issued an arrest warrant on Monday, less than an hour after the Prosecutor’s Office requested it, against opposition leader Edmundo González Urrutia, who was the presidential candidate of the largest anti-Chavez bloc in the July 28 elections.

The Public Prosecutor’s Office has asked the courts to issue an arrest warrant against González Urritia after he failed to respond to three summonses, in which they expected him to make a statement in the context of an investigation against him related to the fraud complaint he made regarding the presidential elections that, according to the results announced by the National Electoral Council (CNE), gave reelection to Nicolás Maduro.

After being one of the first to denounce fraud in the Venezuelan elections, the Government of Javier Miley recognized González Urrutia as the “undisputed winner” of the elections on August 7.

Following Milei’s statements, the Maduro government decided to expel Argentine diplomatic personnel from Caracas one day after the elections, a measure that was also applied to six other Latin American countries. EFE
